The Practice concentrates exclusively on commercial and business law. About a quarter of the work is dispute resolution. Its aim is to provide all the legal services needed by small and medium sized businesses.
The practice was founded in 1990 by Brian Drewitt who has since worked as a sole principal or in partnership. He is currently supported by consultants specialising in intellectual property, commercial property, employment and litigation. Since January 2014 the practice has been incorporated as Commercial and Business Lawyers Limited.
The offices are on the Newby Road Industrial Estate at Hazel Grove in Stockport. The industrial estate, and two other industrial estates in close proximity, provides an immediate, existing and potential client base, but the practice attracts clients from all over Greater Manchester and Cheshire and further afield.
The Scope of the Work
Most aspects of commercial and business law, including company and partnership advice, shareholder and partnership agreements, terms and conditions of sale, distribution agreements, sale and purchase of businesses and assets, commercial leases, licensing of copyright and other intellectual property, software contracts, employment law and a wide range of commercial litigation, including building and construction.
The Scale of the Work
Much of the work is for small and medium size businesses. Clients vary in size from individuals and family companies to UK subsidiaries of multinational companies. The practice has the experience and ability to deal with, and does deal with, high value, complex commercial litigation. More recently the business has developed a relatively high value commercial conveyancing practice requiring significant expertise. Fee earners are expected to tackle and solve a wide-ranging variety of intellectually challenging problems.
The Practical Law Company provides full service support to all fee earners. The practice has recently replaced all its computer hardware and installed the cloud based MS Office 365 and Windows 7, which enables remote working. Fee earners are supported by the practice administrator, an administration apprentice and a part time accountant/book keeper.
